Brett Eldredge is back on stage, and he opened up about the monumental show in Chicago that marked a comeback moment for the Illinois-born country artist.

The Windy City Smokeout festival took place last month. It was one of the first the “Wanna Be That Song” singer played post-pandemic. Upon taking the stage, Eldredge recalled in an interview with PEOPLE the “major rush” and the “shock” when he returned to his tour bus after the show. Rather than singing immediately after taking the stage, Eldredge just stood there and “teared up, because it was so real and it was so just authentic.”

He shared a video of that moment on Instagram, marking “the first time we all experienced live music after nearly 2 years…I can’t begin to explain the feeling, but I can show you…I will never forget your smiles and the joy on your faces.”

Eldredge, 35, continued to PEOPLE, explaining that he realized:

“I know the joy and happiness that live music can bring to a lot of people, including myself and the band and everybody out there in the crowd.
“We need each other. When the music begins, nothing else matters. And that's what music does. And that's what we do for each other when we're there to connect with one another through music. It's a beautiful thing.”

Eldredge is gearing up to make those connections on his “Good Day” Tour, which kicks off next month in Cleveland, Ohio, with fellow country artist Morgan Evans. Find Eldredge’s tour dates here.
